Last weekend, I got the first Harry Potter book on CD for the boys to listen to. I've never read it, never seen the movies, just like I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies (gasp, I know), for some reason it just didn't appeal to me. But I had gotten a book from the library - a knitting book of course, Charmed Knits - and after looking through it a few times, Dillon was very interested in getting the movie to watch. Not reading the book, but watching the movie. Knowing how much he really needs to be spending more time actually reading, I said I'd rent the movie for him to watch after he reads the book. So we ended up getting both the book and the CD from the library. Every day we listen to it in the car wherever we're going, in the kitchen while they eat breakfast, yesterday the 3 of us lounged around the living room before dinnertime, L and I knitting, and D following along in the book (that's part of the "read the book and you can watch the movie" deal). And last night they wanted to listen to it instead of bedtime music. I think we have a winner, and I'm so thrilled to have gotten them interested in something new. In fact, they're now ahead of me in the CD, so I need to get caught up.
Going along with the Harry theme, they've both made some knitted-gift-requests from the book I linked before. Dillon wants Gryffindor colors, and Lucas says he wants to think about it for a while, but they've asked for socks, mittens, hats and bookscarves (tiny scarves for use as bookmarks) in their colors, and Dillon also wants a Quidditch sweater. Doubt I'll have time for the sweater, but everything else seems do-able for Christmas. I found the sock yarn online last night, and my local yarn shop has the yarn I'll need for the hats and mittens. I won't be starting these projects until at least September 2, which is when my Summer of Socks challenge ends, but I'm prepared at least.

Listening to the book while following along is a great idea for kids who struggle with reading!
