My oldest son is now 10 years old. TEN. So much older than nine - double digits, all the fingers, a whole decade. We have this "tradition", and it's in quotes because we just started doing it a year or two ago, that I make the boys number shirts for their birthdays. I was lazy and disorganized this year, so Dillon's is a shirt he already had (thank goodness for Gap Kids) and I used fabric crayons and the iron to make him a funky 10. Not my best work, but he was excited about it.
My Dad's birthday is 2 days before D's, and I was joking with the boys that maybe Grandpa would like a number shirt. Lucas looked at me and said, in all seriousness "Do you think you have enough paint for that, Mommy??" And Dillon said "Yeah, Grandpa must be at least 30, he's so much older than us." My Dad is 53. :) Of course, my sister still insists that she's only celebrating her 12th birthday for the #th time, but I wanted to tell her that I don't think that works well anymore once your "years of experience" are higher than the age you're impersonating. Hear that, Sarah? You can't be 12 with 16 years experience in March - we're putting a big fat 28 on your cake. I doubt you'll mind, seeing as it's a Death By Chocolate cake, though.
Lucas had strep throat and missed 2 days of school last week while I got him to the doctor, and gave him 24 hours on abx, so I didn't get much knitting done at all. Or at least it felt like it. I've got 3 or 4 socks in progress right now, and an idea for a new one that I want to try asap, before I forget about it.
February Lady-inspired socks; plain socks in yummy Wullenstudio; ribbed socks in Red Hat Lady-esque faux-isle for my Grandma
Got started on something fun for the kids for stocking stuffers, although it's going really s.l.o.w, so I'm glad I began this early! Harry Potter house colors - Gryffindor for Dillon, Slytherin for Lucas, and I'm making bookmarks/scarves on 2mm needles with DMC embroidery floss. It's pretty cute, but the floss has been hurting my hands, so I'm only knitting a few rows a day - at this rate I might get both of them done in time for the holidays!

And my "most-favoritest" recent project is the yarn I dyed today. It's worsted weight wool dyed with KoolAid and Klass drink mixes into super-long stripes in orange and yellow, with pieces left plain in the middle. I'm calling it Candy Corn Stripes, and am planning to knit toe-up footlets for myself. More details, if you're interested, are on my
project page on Ravelry.

oh, i have got to get more organized! not to mention getting into the rhythm of this blogging thing. it's kind of funny, cause i am very consistent with my flickring, but this seems so much harder! lol
i love the idea of the number shirt, and might have to try that this year, as my kids would probably love it too!
and the new yarn you dyed is gorgeous! i love those colors and can't wait to see your new socks. i'm thinking i'm going to have to hold off on socks, as i don't have money for sock yarn right now, and i'm pretty sure i don't have anything that would really work in it's place in my stash (could you imagine Peaches & Creme socks?). :)
soon, i hope......
oh wow Jess! I love that candy corn yarn! so very pretty!
Your son is very handsome. I guess now you can call him a "pre-teen?"
The candy corn yarn is great. I bet it even smells good. I'm anxious to see the socks inspired by the February sweater. Looks like you have a good start on it.
How old is Lucas? My daughter too has been hinting that maybe she would like Slytherin stuff, but since I identify as Slytherin I was worried that she was picking it because of me. I feel like Slytherin is a hard house for a kid to have since the books and movie do (for better or worse) have an anti-Slytherin, pro-Gryffindor stance.
